Frequently asked questions

What is a poetry slam?

A slam is a night of competitive performance poetry - poets compete across several rounds with eliminations in between. Poets have time constraints, must have original poems, and cannot use any sort of prop/costume. Poets are judged by random audience members selected on the night.

Can I be a judge?

There's only two requirements to be a judge: 1) That you don't know any of the competing poets, 2) You can stay for the whole night (2.5 - 3 hours). If that's you, talk to the person on the door to sign up on the night!

What's required to be a judge?

Our philosophy - the less you know about poetry, the better! Judges score every poet out of `10. You can judge as a single person or as a judging team. Judges hear from a sacrificial poet before the slam starts for them to have a baseline to score against. There is a full briefing on the night.
