About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

“He whetū ki te rangi, he waka ki te moana.” E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e rau Rangatira mā, nei rā te mihi karanga.

Te Kura o Ngā Kurī a Taiwhata is dedicated to reviving Pacific celestial navigation and reclaiming the indigenous knowledge of our seafaring ancestors. Guided by knowledge shared by Master navigator Pius Mau Piailug and carried forward by Pwo Navigator Jack Thatcher, the kura nurtures a new generation of navigators through traditional, non-instrumental wayfinding.

This wānanga is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of this kaupapa and strengthen your connection to te taiao. The kōrero will focus on the tikanga, values, and mātauranga that underpin celestial navigation and highlight their importance in maintaining our relationship with the natural world. Held under the mana of Waipuna-ā-Rangi, we honour the elements that guide us—rain, wind, and stars—and the mātauranga that continues to flow through them.
