About this Event

2 DAY INTRODUCTION TO UX | WELLINGTON

This course is designed to give you a more thorough understanding of the principles behind a modern user centred design process and more practical experience of some of the most common activities you will encounter in a typical user experience project. The 2 days are designed so you can apply what you learn immediately to your current projects and also use what you learn as a base for further study.

See the bottom of the course description for more information on choosing between the 1 day crash course and 2 day Introduction to UX design course.

What you will learn

You will take a UX project from research to testing.

You are put in a team and work on a digital design project throughout the day learning and applying human centered design methods as you go. No coding is required with the focus for this day on design decisions rather than implementation.

You will learn the basic principles and definitions behind user experience design.

You will learn the basic principles of user experience design including its history and common terminology used.

You will get an introduction to basic principles and best practice for user research.

You learn how to identify if research is required, what kind of research is best suited to your project, and the basics of designing research to get valid outcomes. You experience implementing a common research method and learn how to synthesise and interpret user research results.

As well as covering all the material found in our 1 day crash course you get to spend more time learning how to facilitate research to get usable results and learning how to synthesise your research results to identify themes, needs, and opportunities.

You will get an introduction to basic principles and best practice for interaction design.

You learn the basic principles behind making good interaction and UI design decisions and experience putting those principles into practice.

This includes the material covered in our crash course but also goes into more depth on best practice UI/Interaction design and how to design to accomodate common user/customer behaviour.

You will get an introduction to basic principles and best practice for usability testing.

You learn what you can and can’t user test, how to design user tests that are likely to get you valid results and experience designing and facilitating user tests for you project.

How it works

This is an experiential course. You learn by doing, developing a project throughout the 2 days taking it through a full UX design process from initial research through to usability testing. To ensure you can use what you learn during the week in your regular design practice you are given:

Methods

You get common UX methods that make up a typical UX design process. These are practical ways of working that you can take away and start applying immediately.

Principles

You get the foundation theory behind these methods - why we work the way we do. This gives you a basis for further study and helps you judge how appropriate any method is for a given problem. A firm grasp of basic principles also makes it easier for you to alter a method or develop your own methods as needed.

Practice

You apply the principles and methods to your project. This experience of applying a clean principle and method to messy human behaviour is essential if you are going to learn how to practically solve real design problems in a human centered way.

Who is it for

No prior knowledge is required to do this course, it is suitable for absolute beginners. However the course is primarily aimed at:

Digital designers Web, interaction and UX designers who want to build on their UX skills, put into practice approaches they have read about, adopt a user centered design approach or better their understanding of the principles behind common UX design methods.

Graphic designers and Traditional designers who want to transition into digital design or learn how to work better with their UX colleagues.

Strategists and analysts Senior practitioners who want to gain an understanding of the principles of user experience design and experience how those principles are practiced on the ground.

Developers who want to build on their UX skills or learn how to work better with their UX colleagues.

Product owners and project managers who want a better understanding of how a user experience design approach can get them better outcomes on their products and projects.

What to bring

Everything you need will be provided. We don’t supply lunch but we do do a morning coffee run and supply fruit and snacks to keep you going.

Should I do the 1 day, 2 day, or 1 week User Experience Design Course?

We provide a 1 day (The UX Crash Course), 2 day (Introduction to UX design) and 1 week (UX Intensive Week) UX course.

They are all based on the same practical approach and cover similar subject matter areas but vary in the level of depth they go into and the time you get to put the methods into practice. None of them assume any previous experience with design or technology, and you should be able to start applying what you learn straight away after any of them.

We recommend the 1 day course for people who want an understanding of UX principles and experience in working on a UX project in as rapid a format as possible! You participate in a full human centered UX process, moving very quickly through each stage. You will learn enough to start applying what you learn in your regular design practice, and to use as a base for further study.

We recommend the 2 day course for people who need a more thorough grounding in the principles and methods and more time to practice putting them into action. This course covers all the material found in the 1 day course, but gives you more time to practice the methods and includes extra principles and methods we can’t fit into the 1 day course.

We recommend the week long course for people who need to ‘level up’ and become a full UX designer, or have demanding roles that require a robust ability to apply best practice human centered design principles to their UX work. This week can be done in addition to either the 1 day or 2 day course or can be taken as a stand alone course. It includes all the material found in our 1 day UX courses (Crash Course, user research, information architecture, UI design, and usability testing) and the 2 day introduction course, but includes extra content that connects all these practices together and more time to experience putting everything you learn into practice.

Combining courses

The 2 day course is not designed to follow the 1 day course but is intended as an alternative for people who need more depth. We don’t recommend doing the 1 day course with the intention of following it with the 2 day course as there is a lot of overlap in course material.

All other courses (including the week long UX intensive course) are suitable as a follow up to both the 1 day crash course and 2 day introduction course. Although there is some material overlap all the other courses go into much more depth through each step of a human centred UX process.
