2nd Sustainable Healthcare in Aotearoa - NZ Forum


"The Zero Carbon Bill, implications for the healthcare sector and opportunities to create health and wellness"

University of Otago - Wellington campus, 23 Mein Street, Nordmeyer lecture theatre and online via Zoom webinar


A free full day of exciting presentations, discussions and networking opportunities to connect on sustainable health care. This forum will include national and international speakers on environmentally sustainable healthcare, and a wide range of stakeholders from the New Zealand health sector, DHBs and beyond, who will discuss the implications of the ‘Zero Carbon Bill’ for the health sector, and how sustainable healthcare can bring wide co-benefits to health, health equity, and wellbeing.

Confirmed keynote speakers:

Procurement: Dr Cassandra Thiel (Zoom) - Assistant Professor at New York University

Her research utilizes life cycle assessment and principles of industrial ecology to analyze the environmental performance of hospital design, healthcare practice, and medical technologies with the goal to develop a new field of specialized research focused on healthcare sustainability, which introduces medical providers to data-driven, environmentally-preferable solutions while simultaneously developing and improving sustainability metrics and tools to better account for human and environmental health.

Buildings: Mark McKenna (In person) - Global Sustainability Group Leader at Norman Disney and Young

Mark leads the Global Sustainability Group - a collective of highly skilled sustainability professionals that work across 5 continents to create leading sustainability outcomes for buildings, infrastructure, towns and cities. Mark will present on case studies of Australian green hospital projects.

Health and Wellbeing: Sudhvir Singh (Zoom), Physician, Director of Policy at EAT

Sudhvir is a physician with a background in sustainable development, health economics & urban advocacy leading the policy team at EAT. Sudhvir was one of the authors on the recently published Lancet report: Food in the Anthropocene: the EAT–Lancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems.
