About this event

Greater Christchurch is growing fast, with our population forecast to double to 1 million people within the next 60 years, if not earlier.

Local government, mana whenua and central government, through the Whakawhanake Kāinga Komiti (Urban Growth Partnership for Greater Christchurch) are working together to decide how we respond to population growth in a way that will provide a good quality of life while also tackling important issues such as combating climate change, preserving the environment, and making housing more affordable.

We are inviting local leaders, thinkers and influencers to a series of workshops to inform how we accommodate this growth and invest in our transport system over the next 30 years to address these challenges. This includes consideration of a new turn up and go public transport service that would run along a dedicated corridor from the central city west to Hornby and north to Belfast, and focusing more on future residential and commercial development along this and other key public transport routes.

This work build on the aspiration set by our community in 2020 during the Greater Christchurch 2050 engagement.

The questions we want to answer are:

  1. How do we best accommodate more people in a way which provides a high quality of life for our people, a thriving economy and protects our environment, the things we value about our place and community for us and for future generations?
  2. What does this mean for the future function of our centres and towns?
  3. What might a turn up and go public transport system look like for Greater Christchurch?

This engagement will inform the development of a draft Greater Christchurch Spatial Plan and an Indicative Business Case for Mass Rapid Transit, both with provide the basis for partnership and joint investment between local government, mana whenua and central government in Greater Christchurch.  We need your involvement to make sure this work reflects the needs and priorities of our people and our place – now and into the future.
