A kōrero with Cath Handley – an evening to celebrate the contribution of this wonderful Waiheke wahine!
Driven by an absolute desire not to be a moaner, but to use her prior business and life experience to support positive change in our community, Cath Handley put her name forward for the Waiheke Local Board elections.
Nine years on, Cath is not seeking re-election and when approached by W3 she has reluctantly agreed for us to have an evening to celebrate the incredible service and commitment this remarkable wahine, has given to our community.
Nine years is a long time, especially when the bulk of that time was as chair for seven and a half years (after 18 months as deputy chair), over three successive boards.
Given her standing in the community, W3 will be breaking with our normal kaupapa to open this invitation to anyone interested, with W3 members receiving notification X days before it appears in the Gulf News and will be promoted more widely. SO if you and members of your household want to attend this event, purchas your tickets ASAP.
Cath says her greatest compliment is that her regular Covid communications made people feel less isolated. This speaks volumes about the type of leader Cath is – always focused on other people. But don’t think its been almost a decade of pats on the back and bouquets, as many of our wāhine leaders experience, Cath’s had her fair share of facing misogyny and being undermined behind her back.
The evening will be MC’d by Mikki-Tae Tapara (Waikato Tainui, Ngāti Koroki) and Cath will be interviewed by award winning journalist Carmen Parahi (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Hine, Rongowhakaata). Rest assured we will unpack it all. It promises to be a fantastic evening of inspiration, reflection, humour and ahead of the elections – we want to know Cath’s perspective on what makes a great Local Board.
