Description

PERFORMANCE: School of Music Festival

This popular event opens with a varied programme of performances by School of Music students from our jazz, songwriting, choral and classical performance disciplines, presenting the audience with a snapshot of life at the school, before being beguiled into the night by an accomplished and playful staff performance of Saint-Saëns’ humorous suite of fourteen movements, The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux). Originally written as a joke, Saint-Saëns ensured his ‘grand zoological fantasy’ be published posthumously in order to avoid tarnishing his otherwise ‘serious’ image! Following a tale of the untamed, each of the fourteen movements represents a different animal, from roosters to roos, and elephants to asses, finishing up with an all feathers and fur finale.

In keeping with the evening’s French flavour, the University Of Auckland Symphony Orchestra takes on Mozart’s Symphony No. 31, more widely known under its nom de plume as the Paris Symphony, said to have made Mozart’s mark as a newly mature musician, with its crowd-pleasing opening and a finale described as a ‘miniature masterpiece’ in its own right.

Also showcasing jazz and pop performers, as well as our acclaimed choral ensembles, this event promises an evening of great riches!

N.B. Online registrations will close 3 hours prior to each event start time. Registrations are recommended, however, not compulsory.
