Description

Waka carry stories, art, science, knowledge, whakapapa and performance. When the waka arrives it seeks relationships, contact and togetherness.” - A Waka Odyssey Creative Team

We’re holding a content creation sprint for A Waka Odyssey, the flagship event which will open the NZ Festival in 2018, over the weekend of the 17/18/19 November at a central location in the Wellington CBD.

We are inviting anyone who wants to be involved in this event which will create history - creatives, writers, artists, website developers, videographers, musicians, sailors, storytellers, poets, VR producers, historians, dancers, the list goes on.

We need many viewpoints, voices and hearts. This is your opportunity to be part of a uniquely Pacific event. Your work will be showcased on the New Zealand Festival’s (formerly the International Arts Festival) digital channels, including the website, a dedicated project newsletter, Instagram and Facebook. It is an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of New Zealand’s best creative talent on a project that focuses on the unity of the Pacific world view.
It is also an opportunity for a waka sailing with your team in Wellington Harbour in February.

What is a content sprint?

Similar to a hackathon and the 48 Hour Film Festival, over the course of the weekend participants will come together to form teams. Or you can work as an individual. Each team will get to choose a theme/topic to work on together.

There will be a number of themes to choose from, including celestial navigation, voyaging, science, environment, sustainability, history, journeying, home and belonging,

All participants get access to a series of experts who will talk through different elements of the Odyssey to help define the parameters and possibilities of their topic. The aim of the creative sprint is to create a range of content which can be spoken word, interactive, video, music, or whatever digitally distributable form the teams wish to dream up.

This unique content will be shared across the Waka Odyssey campaign during the month of February 2018 on the New Zealand Festival channels.

The sprint will bring you into a cohort of talented and interesting people who are keen to materialise their perspectives into tangible pieces of content - whether film, writing, photography, illustration or tech. The mentors available are knowledgeable and have decades of experience between them in New Zealand’s arts, tech and voyaging sectors. You’ll be involved in bringing the New Zealand Festival to life for the New Zealanders who can’t make the flagship event, and to be involved in broadening the conversation.

What is A Waka Odyssey?

A mass assembly of waka hourua (twin-hulled ocean-going waka) will descend on Wellington Harbour at dusk on 23 February, opening New Zealand’s largest international arts festival with an unprecedented theatrical work set on the waters of Wellington Harbour.

Designed to honour and celebrate our shared voyaging history, A Waka Odyssey is a series of events over five days, beginning with an opening night theatrical spectacle to honour the legacy of famous Pacific explorer, Kupe.

The choreographed movements of seven waka hourua, eight waka taua, and a fleet of waka ama will bring the harbour to life, while on land actors, choirs and kapa haka groups welcome the voyagers to the Capital.

A 1000-strong new haka for Wellington will be performed, and a full musical score is being composed by New Zealand music icon Warren Maxwell. Developed through a unique partnership between A Waka Odyssey Creative Team, New Zealand Festival and Te Āti Awa / Taranaki Whānui Iwi, tens of thousands of people are expected on Wellington’s waterfront to experience this exceptional free event, as the Capital’s harbour takes centre stage.
