Event description
Favourite drink of artists, writers and mischief-makers, enjoy a nocturnal Absinthe tasting experience with performances and food to match.

About this Event

There is perhaps no spirit so notorious as Absinthe. Favourite drink of artists, writers and mischief-makers, it was wildly popular during the Belle Epoque, then banned for purportedly having hallucinogenic qualities and precipitating murder.

During Artweek 2020, learn about the history and myths of this notorious spirit in a two hour tasting experience at Suite Gallery in Ponsonby, enjoy sampling several brands that are prepared in the traditional way using an absinthe fountain, with live performances and food pairings to match. Your ticket price also includes a private viewing of Suite Gallery's latest show featuring Ans Westra.

Absinthe's popularity hit its peak between 1880 and 1910, becoming a quintessential part of Belle Epoque French society. It became a symbol of inspiration and daring, widely associated with the bohemian artists and writers who were revolutionising art and literature and by 1910 the French were consuming 36,000,000 litres per year.

Please note: Absinthe Obscura is for people 18 years and older. Responsible drinking is encouraged. Your ticket price includes absinthe tasting, performances, food pairing and a private viewing at Suite Gallery.
