Mental wellbeing is deeply connected to wider wellbeing in our society. We need to embed this understanding in everything we do – within our mental health and addiction system, our wider health and social system, and at every level of society. He Ara Oranga – Mental Health and Addiction Inquiry

Without mental health there is no health! It is a foundational pillar for wellbeing and resiliency in the individual, whānau, hapū, iwi and community.

Well individuals contribute to well whānau, schools and workplaces, communities, economies and society

Mental wellbeing is more than the mere absence of mental illness. It is the capacity to feel, think, and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and respond to the challenges we face. It is a positive sense of emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing that respects the importance of culture, diversity, equity, social justice and personal dignity. It forms the basis on which individuals, whānau, hapū and iwi and communities are able to thrive.

Mental wellbeing is a holistic approach which is congruent with most indigenous and non-western cultures’ understanding of health and wellbeing. It is aligned to people’s aspiration of wellbeing for themselves and their whānau. For those living with a mental illness, wellbeing is a cornerstone of the recovery model.

The Government believes that wellbeing belongs at the heart of policymaking - 2019 Budget Statement

Informed by social, cultural and environmental determinants , adopting a wellbeing framework facilitates better engagement with non-health agencies, such as local government who can incorporate wellbeing outcomes in their policy development and programme delivery.

Vision for Mental Wellbeing

Thriving individuals who belong to supportive family, cultural and/or social networks, participating in and contributing to inclusive and safe communities

This two day workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and the practice of promoting mental wellbeing. Drawing on over thirty years of working in mental wellbeing, Barry will provide a critical analysis of the social and cultural determinants of mental wellbeing. He will share his learnings from designing and implementing programmes including the pitfalls and solutions to common problems that arise in implementing such programmes. He will also present his proven model of collaborative partnerships using the principles of collective impact and transformational change which has been applied in numerous settings and populations.

An opportunity for a day of learning with internationally respected mental wellbeing practitioner and suicidologist, Barry Taylor

Barry has proven leadership over 30 years at local, national and international levels in using community initiatives and strength-based approaches to improve individual and community wellbeing and the prevention of suicide.He has extensive experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes at the local and national level, especially creating collaborativepartnerships to promote wellbeing.

Barry has lectured and mentored programmes, both nationally and internationally, and been appointed to numerous government advisory committees on mental wellbeing and suicide prevention.

As a Health Sociologist and Public Health practitioner, Barry has a long-term interest in the social and cultural determinants of wellbeing, especially the role of gender and he brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for promoting wellbeing in men. He has examined the impact of discrimination, internalised stigma, social exclusion or inclusion on mental wellbeing along with the role of human rights.

He embraces a holistic understanding of wellbeing and has an interest in the role spirituality and ecology contributes to a person's wellbeing. Before returning to New Zealand his last project was the re-orienting of a local health district's mental health promotion program to a wellbeing framework, established the South Western Sydney Wellbeing Collaboration, and championed a multicultural adaption of The Five Ways to Wellbeing to meet the diverse cultural demographics of the health district. For this work he was awarded the NSW Mental Health Commissioner's Community Champion Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to mental wellbeing and suicide prevention.

After a number of years overseas, Barry has returned to New Zealand both passionate and enthused to make a contribution to promoting wellbeing in this country.

Places in each workshop are limited. If the workshop is full please register your name on the waitlist. TaylorMade Training and Consulting reserve the right to cancel the workshop if there are not the minimum number of registrations. If cancelled a full refund will be given.

Catering:
This workshop is fully catered. Please indicate in the registration process if you have any particular dietary requirements. If you register after the registration closing date, while every effort will be made, your dietary requirements may not be able to be catered.

Scholarships
There is a limited number of partial and full scholarships for those wishing to attend the workshop. Full scholarships are available for mental health consumers, carers and volunteers. Partial scholarships of either 25%, 50% or 75% are available for tertiary students in health, social service and disability related courses. No refund but registration can be transferred to another person

No show on the day of workshop: No refund
