About Inspiring Communities

For the last decade, Inspiring Communities has been learning with and from Kiwi communities about what community-led development is, what good community-led practice requires and which tools, tips and frameworks most assist local communities to move forward. By working with US based Neighbourhoods expert Jim Diers, we bring the best of national and international community building experience to the bottom of the south. About your workshop facilitators…..

Jim Diers

Jim Diers has a passion for getting people engaged with their communities and in the decisions that affect their lives. Participatory democracy has been Jim Diers’ preoccupation and his career for the past 40 years. In his work with grassroots community organisations, the largest health care cooperative in the US, Seattle city government and communities all over the world, Jim has found ways to get people more involved with their communities and with decisions and actions that affect their lives. He works with governments, NGOs, community associations, faith-based groups and other networks and is passionate about mobilising the power of community to revitalise neighbourhoods and business districts, prevent crime, promote health, care for one another, sustain the planet, and demand accountability and social justice.

Currently, Jim teaches courses in community development and organising at the University of Washington and serves on the faculty of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute. He travels internationally to deliver speeches, present workshops, and provide technical assistance to community associations, non-profit organizations, and government.

Megan Courtney

Hailing from small town New Zealand, Megan spent 15 years working in local government in Auckland. Her former Waitakere City Council roles focused on facilitating and brokering sector, place-based and citywide partnerships to improve community outcomes. She also worked with the Department of Internal Affairs to produce practical partnering tools and resources for those working at the collaboration coalface.

When it comes to community-led development Megan describes herself as a doer, thinker, writer, planner, teacher and learner – with being part of the Inspiring Communities team enabling her to combine all six skills and passions! She’s a firm believer in the power of local people and places to do amazing things and loves working alongside communities to help make locally-led action happen.
