The Auckland Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club has now been in existence for 40 years, and that’s something worth celebrating!
Join us for an evening to look back at the history of free flight in Auckland, from the very first home-built hang gliders made out of aluminium and sailcloth, to the appearance in the ‘80s of fluoro–coloured monstrosities in the form of early paragliders.
We’ve managed to unearth archival film footage and photos from the early 1970’s, which will have its first public showing on the night. You won’t want to miss seeing younger incarnations of some of our current club members flying their rickety contraptions off familiar sites with little to no regard for modern concepts like ‘safety’ or ‘airworthiness’.
In addition, we have a great line-up of speakers sharing their knowledge and stories about the history and development of hang-gliding and paragliding in Auckland. Rumour has it that the hang gliding star of the legendary Blue Stratos TV commercial will be in attendance and signing autographs on the night!
If you’re an original member who managed to survive those early forays into free flight relatively unscathed, or a new pilot wanting to learn about how the sports that we love originated, come along. There’ll be something for everyone!
Tickets are only $22 each and are selling fast, so be sure to buy yours now.
Doors open at 7pm and there will be some short presentations starting from 7.30pm.
Finger food included and a cash bar will be open. Merchandise, including commemorative T-shirts and photo books, will be available for order on the night.
