Description

There is a growing concern that our increasingly risk averse society is contributing to a generation of ‘bubble-wrapped’ children that have limited opportunities to play creatively, instigate physical activity, overcome challenges independently, and learn to manage risks appropriately.

Why you should come along:

A couple of years after Auckland University of Technology (AUT) released the ‘State of Play in NZ’ report, play for children, especially over 5 years, is still largely undervalued in our society. Come along to hear from Simon Walters, an AUT research in the field of play, and find out why play is so important and what you can do to provide more playtime for your children.

This talk is for any parent or caregiver who wants to find out more about the value of play or anyone interested in this topic.

Free entry but koha is very welcome.

About Simon Walters:

Simon works in the Sports Coaching team as a senior lecturer in the School of Sport and Recreation at AUT, with his main area of expertise being in the sociology of sport. His research interests have primarily focused on young people’s experiences of organised sport and play and he works closely with Scott Duncan the co-author of the ‘State of Play’ report.

Simon, a father of two teenage daughters, is originally from Wales and has settled in the small village of Puhoi just north of Auckland. Simon loves living in NZ and exploring the outdoors and the many beautiful places we have on our doorstep. He completed his PhD in 2012, is a member of the International Play Association, and currently sits on the Steering Group for the Sport NZ funded project Good Sports, implemented by Aktive Auckland Sport and Recreation.

The workshop is brough to you by Ako.
