Event description

Description

Join fellow alumni to hear from Sydney-based, Architecture alumnus Professor Deo Prasad – CEO of the CRC for Low Carbon Living (National Innovation Hub for low carbon built environment). Recognised as a national leader in the field of sustainable buildings and cities, and among the leading advocates for sustainability in Australia, Deo will share insights into his contributions to research and the built environment in the field of sustainability.

Deo will be joined by Richard Birdsey, a Science alumnus and Senior Project Officer at the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. Richard's work is focused on the area of business and human rights, working to implement the NSW and Commonwealth Modern Slavery Acts which will help protect vulnerable workers in Australia and across global supply chains.

The panel discussion will be facilitated by Ruby Chen, an Arts and Commerce alumna who is our Volunteer Alumni Coordinator for Sydney. There will be plenty of time for networking with fellow alumni in the evening.

Meet Deo Prasad

Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1991, Deo has been a highly influential, driving force for sustainable design in both academia and professional practise. In 2004 he received the NSW State Government’s individual GreenGlobe Award and in 2006 he received the Royal Australian Institute of Architect’s National Education Award for contribution to ‘sustainability education, research and design’. Deo is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and received an Order of Australia from the Governor General of Australia in 2014 for his contributions to research and community in the field of sustainability.

Meet Richard Birdsey

Richard started his science career as a fledgling marine biologist at the University of Auckland but succumbed to the allure of warmer climes to study on the Great Barrier Reef, completing a Masters of Marine Science. Later, becoming a land dweller, he worked delivering environmental education training to the then 15,000 employees of the Sydney Water Board before moving to the newly formed NSW Environment Protection Authority in 1996. Since then he has worked on numerous issues such as grappling with complex waste problems, supporting the development of ‘green goods and services’ and campaigning to reduce the devastating impact of heavy metals on women, children and industrial workers.

As Sydney's Volunteer Alumni Coordinator, Ruby looks forward to meeting alumni and friends based in the area. Make sure you also stay up to date with our activities and events in the region and join the Sydney Alumni Facebook group!
