This course is accredited by the New Zealand Veterinary Nurse Association for continuing professional development credit. CPD points: 5.5

Formed in 2018, we hope to provide a national structure for volunteers who want to help animals impacted by a disaster. We do this by assisting the evacuation of animals during emergencies and providing initial emergency sheltering until traditional animal welfare charities can accommodate them. With no government funding, we need your help to do the right thing for the animals. See more at

“We so desperately need this!”

The course starts sharp at 9 am, so we welcome you to arrive a touch earlier, so we can start on time. If you have any issues please call or text Mark on 021408824.

Prior to the course, we recommend you review our Code of Conduct if you are not familiar with CIMS, review the CIMS online tutorial (noting there have been minor changes since version 2 was introduced)

We also recommend that you look at the learning resources available at and after the course) and should you undertake any of the free online courses available please make sure you save your certificate.

We will have a limited stock of T-shirts available for purchase on the day at $30 (cash or cheque or mobile app payment), please email with your size to pre-order if possible.

Please wear comfortable clothing, reading glasses if needed, pen and paper. Please bring your Laptop or Tablet if you have one for the second day as these are needed for the online phase. You may want to have a water bottle too. During the lunch break, you are welcome to go to the mall or other local food outlets. Tea and coffee will be provided on-site. The course is scheduled to finish by 5 pm each day.

Am I automatically a responder for Animal Evac after the course?

In most cases, you will be flagged as meeting our minimum requirements and added to our database. However, you may be required to undertake additional training depending on your role. In some cases, you may already hold the required qualifications, and once we have confirmation of those we can update your status. Many of our roles also require you to pass a criminal background check. After the course, you will receive an email invitation from our team management system (D4H Team Manager) so you can update your details, etc.

Are there food stores or cafes close by?

Yes, we have ensured shops to purchase food are within walking distance. However, if you have special dietary requirements, you are welcome to bring your own lunch too.

This is a classroom-based course and does not have any live animal handling. Please do not bring your pets.

A big thanks to the (TBC)for allowing us to use their training room too.

We look forward to seeing you all at the course! We still have a few more spaces available if you know of anyone else interested too.

Kind regards

Organiser Animal Evac New Zealand Trust

Organiser of Animal Evac NZ Foundation Course (Greymouth)

Formed in 2018, following the devastating Edgecumbe flood the year prior that saw over 1,000 animals left behind in need of rescue, Animal Evac New Zealand (Kararehe Whakawatea) is a charity comprised volunteers throughout New Zealand who can assist emergency services and civil defence with the evacuation of animals, and to provide initial temporary sheltering in an emergency or disaster. Though there is a primary focus on companion animals, Animal Evac works to advocate for all animals that are vulnerable or affected by disasters.
