Auckland Seminar: Jeremy Schwartz Constructing Portfolios with Smart Beta
Tue 8 November 2016, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM NZDT
Auckland Lunch Seminar
Hosted at The Northern Club, 19 Princes Street, Auckland
Please arrive promptly for a 12:00pm start. A catered lunch will be provided by BetaShares Capital Ltd. Our guest speaker Jeremy Schwarz, CFA will speak for approximately 40-45 mins and we will have a 30min Q&A discussion following the presentation.
Global asset consulting firm Towers Watson wrote in July 2013 that “somewhere between alpha and beta lies smart beta”. Since then there has been strong interest and institutional investment in smart-beta strategies as new research has emerged.
The Efficient Markets Hypothesis claims that the market price of any security is always the best unbiased estimate of its true value. But stock prices can—and do—deviate from a firm’s underlying value for many reasons. If stock prices are not always efficient, then reweighting equity markets based on fundamentals (like dividends or earnings) can produce better total and risk-adjusted returns over time.
In this seminar, the following key points will be presented:
- What is smart beta? and do return premia exist?
- Analytics from deconstructing index returns and sources of return
- What criteria institutional investors should consider when identifying smart beta
- Application of smart beta exposures to ‘explore the core’
- How smart beta behaves and can deliver in:
- o various market scenarios (eg global central bank policy dynamics)
- o regional exposures (eg emerging markets)
- o across asset classes (eg fixed income etc)
