Description

The Sustainability Society, together with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, invite you to join us to explore Auckland’s latest climate projections and to discuss the potential implications and responses required for the future of our city.

Cities and urban areas are estimated to account for 80% of global GHG emissions. They are also strongly affected by climate change. Over 90% of all urban areas are coastal, putting most of them at risk of flooding from rising sea levels and powerful storms. In response, cities around the world are leading the way in moving to a low-carbon future. Choices made in cities today about long-lived urban infrastructure will determine the extent and impact of climate change, our ability to achieve emission reductions and our capacity to adapt to changing circumstances.

As a C40 City, Auckland is committed to playing its part in this city-led climate change action, working with other climate leaders, such as Paris, London and Seattle to reduce GHG emissions and climate risks.

A key aspect of Auckland’s climate action commitments is to better understand our climate future. We know that there are big changes heading our way – hotter temperatures, more significant rainfall and flooding events and rising sea levels – understanding the scale and extent of these changes means we have a better chance at adapting and potentially becoming stronger and more resilient by doing so.

Hot on the heels of COP23, this event coincides with the publication of NIWA’s latest climate projections for Auckland, co-commissioned by Auckland Council and the Council Controlled Organisations, together with the region’s District Health Boards.

About the Projections:

NIWA has applied the climate change projections developed through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report to the Auckland Region. This work provides Auckland with the best information on future projected changes for the region, to inform our decision-making and understanding of risks, vulnerabilities and opportunities. The report incorporates information on a range of climate variables for 2040, 2090 and 2110.

Event information

Auckland’s latest climate projections contained in this newly released report will be presented at the event followed by a panel discussion to explore the potential implications and necessary responses from a variety of perspectives.

This event is hosted by The Sustainability Society and The Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) with contribution from Auckland Council.
