How do you turn that great idea into a series?

Before you spend months trying to work out how to write and create your awesome show - you need to learn the basics.

- Like whether or not your series ideas has legs.

- Like why a weak story engine will hamper your series.

- Like how many episodes your series should have.

- Like what type of series your idea best suits.

- And whether your series has all the necessary elements to make people take notice.

This workshop also teaches you what you need to know about TV "pitch" documents and how the local market works.

Participants (that’s you, aspiring TV writer) will:

  • Be invited to pitch their project to a panel of TV Creators
  • Receive handouts and electronic notes

Who is this workshop for? Aspiring TV writers with some screenwriting or writing experience and a basic understanding of screenwriting. Industry pros who want to upskill. This is for you if you're a new TV writer with the germ of an idea for a TV drama or comedy series – the primary focus is on learning how to develop that idea and make sure that has a strong enough story engine to run for multiple episodes.

Facilitator: Kathryn Burnett

Kathryn is an award-winning screenwriter who has worked in the NZ television/film industry for over 20 years. She has significant television and film credits and has developed numerous television series for NZ’s major production companies. Her most recently produced TV credits include – “Fresh Eggs,” “The Sounds” and multi-award winning series “The Cul de Sac.” In 2019 she co-wrote TVNZ telefeature "The Tender Trap" and is currently on the development team for an HBO sci-fi series , an Australian rom-com series and has a comedy series in development with Warner Brothers. Does this workshop cover all types of TV shows?

No, it focuses on scripted television series - drama and comedy. It is suitable for drama or comedy series, web series, telefeature, mini-series or short run series.

I’m interested in screenwriting – is this for me?

Yes. But if you’re a brand new screenwriter you'll be better served by my foundation course Beginner’s Guide Writing Workshop: Screenwriting (Next course starting Oct 21)

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Age minimum is 16.(But get in touch if you'd like to discuss!)

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

If the event is canceled by organiser, participants will receive a full and automatic refund. If canceled by the participant - cancellation must be 14 days prior to the event to receive a full refund. If cancellation is less than 14 days - a 50% fee refund is available at the facilitator's discretion.

What do I need to bring?

Pen and paper , good internet connection and your computer.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Transferrable to another person - yes. Another event - no. (But check with us.)

Do I have to show my printed ticket at the event?

No, you'll be on our list. The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the actual attendee. Is that okay? Yes. (We will check but people often buy this workshop for someone as a present.)
