About this event

Jayden Houghton’s new book Tikanga Māori and State Law was published in May this year. The book, over 1,000 pages, features important cases, legislation and scholarship on tikanga Māori and state law in extended excerpts integrated in the author’s narrative, commentary and analysis. It also presents over 500 questions for consideration and discussion.

The book is designed to support the teaching of tikanga Māori and its relationship with state law in over 17 law subject areas across the country’s law schools.

Justice Christian Whata of the Court of Appeal, who led the Law Commission’s He Poutama project, writes: “[T]he legal community of Aotearoa New Zealand has been waiting a very long time for a book that provides a comprehensive introduction to tikanga in the law. It has finally arrived. … Reflecting the reality that the law is in a state of transition, the book itself marks a significant step in the ongoing evolution of state law’s engagement with tikanga. It is a must read for any person genuinely interested in the relationship between tikanga and state law, from the students who are beginning their journeys in the law, to senior counsel and judges who are beginning their journeys with tikanga.”
