A practical and hands-on workshop to give students confidence and skills to create a selection of different books. Gabi teaches traditional bookbinding skills alongside self-developed D.I.Y techniques so that students are able to create quality books with simple tools rather than needing access to a book-bindery.
Each week she will guide the students through a new binding, so that each week everyone will take home a new book they have made themselves. Along the way, Gabi will teach about the materials used, different finishing options and ways to experiment.
Gabi will give out printed resources every week so that at the end of the course the students will have a guide to continue their book-making practice
Please note there will be a material fee of $15 to pay directly to the tutor for the material provided (paper, cloth, glue, needles, thread and additional materials).
THE 6 WEEKS COURSE WILL RUN OVER 7 WEEKS FROM TUESDAY EVENING 21 FEBRUARY TO TUESDAY 4 APRIL (NO CLASS ON 14 MARCH)
EACH CLASS WILL START AT 6PM AND FINISH AT 9PM.
About Gabi Lardies:
Gabi Lardies is an artist and freelance graphic designer. She graduated from graphic design in 2012 at AUT, where she spent considerable time in the book bindery and print room. She continues to make books as part of her own creative practice, exploring the form and tangible experience of books to convey concepts and mood. Most recently she has explored this at an Artists Residency with Artists’ Alliance, making hand-bound and hand-printed books over a 6 week period. She sees self-publishing as an important tool for creative people and minority voices; and encourages this through teaching book binding in a way which does not require expensive equipment and also helping organise events such as Auckland Zinefest. Her graphic design work spans both print and web but is largely computer-based so she relishes chances to make with her hands. In her creative work she enjoys exploring print production and writing (often this will end up in a handmade book… sometimes not).
