Event description

This workshop is an opportunity for both beginners and intermediate painters to experiment with watercolour, develop their technical skill base, and discover a range of traditional and contemporary painting methodologies.

Throughout the workshop, students will work from a variety of botanical references which range from, live plants too, images of botanical specimens. These will be provided for the first session and for the second session, the group will source their own references to work from. The group will take a walk to the Parnell Rose Gardens where they will be encouraged to spend time sketching and taking photos of the surrounding greenery.

Students will improve their confidence in watercolour painting through a variety of technically driven warm-up exercises. These range from but aren't limited to: graded washes, flat washes, pointillism, glazing, masking, lifting colour, and detailed brushwork. The warm-up exercises provided aim to encourage experimentation and inspire painters to approach botanical watercolour painting in a variety of ways.

In this workshop, students will also learn about painting from light to dark, mark making, and practice using masking and layering as a compositional tool.

Students will have the opportunity to spend time planning and producing work that is more resolved on the third day of the workshop through guided sustained painting sessions.
