Event description

Description

An evening with Kim Munro,
Kim’s yoga journey began in 2004 after an accident that caused significant head and spinal injuries and as a young gymnast, she suffered an undiagnosed fracture to her lumbar spine. This has caused her to approach her yoga practice in an individualistic manner. She is mindful of what works in her body and is aware that a lot of 'traditional' yoga alignment can actually be physically detrimental.

Kim's experience with significant injury led her to research more about individual body needs. Recent studies in comparable anatomy have found that certain conditions that were previously thought of as anomalies are actually very common; extra or missing vertebrae, some degree of scoliosis, sciatic nerve issues and as many as 7% of the populations sacrum is actually fused to the lowest lumbar vertebra, causing lower back pain, and that’s just spinal variations and differences.

Kim uses this knowledge to bring greater depth to her teaching. Considering the differences in our bodies, how can we approach our yoga practice with a ‘one size fits all’ mentality? The truth is we can’t, we must adapt our yoga practice to our unique physical body, rather than forcing it to adhere to a prescribed and outdated view of human movement.
