Description

Musicians of all levels are invited to the New Zealand School of Music for a week of music making and expert coaching from international musicians. Various weekend/ full week options are available, and participants will enjoy rehearsals, masterclasses, and performance opportunities, along with free access to a number of public concerts as part of registration.

Guest artists for the festival are renowned American cellist Brinton Averil Smith; NZTrio's Ashley Brown; Andrew Joyce from the NZSO; Dr Paye Srinarong (Thailand); Artistic Director of Cellophonia and Chamber Music Festival Inbal Megiddo (New Zealand School of Music - 'NZSM'); Rolf Gjelsten (NZSQ, NZSM); Dr Jian Liu (NZSM); Martin Riseley (NZSM); and Donald Maurice (NZSM).

There are five different registration options. It is possible for participants to register for Cellophonia, the Chamber Music week, and the String Ensemble (or a combination of those) together if they wish.


1) CELLOPHONIA – FULL WEEK $150
For all cellists grade 5 and above

  • Monday 27 August
    Cello Masterclass with Inbal Megiddo 5 – 7pm
  • Tuesday 28 August
    Music career panel discussion 7pm - 7:45pm
    Orchestral auditions workshop 7:45pm – 9pm
  • Wednesday 29 August
    Individual lessons as assigned 10am – 12pm
  • Cello Masterclass with Brinton Averil Smith 5 – 7pm
  • Thursday 30 August
    Individual lessons as assigned 10 - 12pm
    Cello masterclass with Brinton Averil Smith 4 – 7pm
  • Friday 31 August
    Cellophonia rehearsal 2 – 5pm
  • Saturday 1 September
    Cellophonia rehearsal 10 – 1pm and 3 – 6pm
    Festival Dinner 7pm
  • Sunday 2 September
    Cellophonia rehearsal 10 – 1pm
    Cellophonia closing concert 4pm

2) CELLOPHONIA – WEEKEND ONLY $60
For all cellists grade 5 and above

  • Friday 31 August
    Cellophonia rehearsal 2 – 5pm
  • Saturday 1 September
    Cellophonia rehearsal 10 – 1pm and 3 – 6pm
    Festival Dinner 7pm
  • Sunday 2 September
    Cellophonia rehearsal 10 – 1pm
    Cellophonia closing concert 4pm

3) CELLOPHONIA TASTER (free of charge)
For cellists grade 4 and below

  • Sunday 2 September
    Rehearsal 1 – 2pm
    Concert 3pm

4) STRING ENSEMBLE (free of charge)
For all string players grade 3 and above

  • Sunday 26 August
    String ensemble rehearsal 2:30 – 4:30pm
  • Tuesday 28 August
    String ensemble rehearsal 4 – 6pm
  • Thursday 30 August
    String Ensemble Concert 8pm

5) CHAMBER MUSIC WEEK $50
For all chamber musicians grade 5 and above. You will be placed in a chamber music group after
registration.

  • Sunday 26 August
    Chamber music rehearsals 6 – 8pm
  • Monday 27 August
    Individual lessons for piano and violin as assigned 10am – 2pm
    Chamber ensemble coaching with festival artists 4 – 6pm
  • Tuesday 28 August
    Chamber music masterclass with Jian Liu and Martin Riseley 12 – 2pm
    Music career panel discussion 7pm - 7:45pm
    Orchestral auditions workshop 7:45pm – 9pm
  • Wednesday 29 August
    Individual lessons for piano, violin, cello as assigned 10am – 12pm
    Chamber music masterclass with Andrew Joyce 12 – 2pm
    Chamber music rehearsals 3:30 – 5pm
  • Thursday 30 August
    Individual lessons for violin, piano, cello as assigned 10 - 12pm
    Chamber music masterclass with Ashley Brown 12 – 2pm
  • Friday 31 August
    Rehearsal for those involved in concert 10:30 – 11:30
    Rising Stars Lunchtime Concert for outstanding players 12 – 1pm
  • Saturday 1 September
    Individual lessons for violin and piano as assigned 10 – 2pm

All participants who register will have free entry to the following concerts through the week.
