Event description

Description

This course will provide students with a basic understanding of the context of ceramic hand-building in relation to historic and contemporary New Zealand craft and fine art pottery. Students will learn practical skills in hand-building, decorating and glazing useful and abstract forms, and producing a small body of finished ceramic objects over the duration of the course.

Lessons will include a focus on materiality and process, looking at the development of a supportive drawing practice, and the use of marketts and glaze tests. Students will (ideally) have the option of participating in a small show of finished work, including a short written statement about their project and application of considered display methods.

Topics covered: Ceramic function and utility, clay behaviour, thinking about form, the importance of a supportive drawing practice, drawing toward building, experimentation with surface, colour and glazing.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

All material is included in the student fee (white clay, red clay, colour, glaze and firing).

Ceramic works will be fired by the tutor and returned to students three to four weeks after the end of class. Students will be able to pick up their ceramic works from Whitecliffe's reception.

There will be a break week between session 5 and session 6 to allow for drying time before glazing on session 6.

MATERIAL LIST

THE 6 WEEKS COURSE WILL RUN FROM THURSDAY EVENING 2 AUGUST TO 13 SEPTEMBER (no class on 6 September - drying time before glazing)

EACH CLASS WILL START AT 6PM AND FINISH AT 9PM.

About Becky Richards :

Becky Richards is a Christchurch born artist. Having completed her BFA at Ilam School of Fine Arts, she spent several years living and exhibiting in Melbourne. She is currently based in Auckland, undertaking her MFA at Elam School of Fine Arts, and part-timeart time at Objectspace gallery.

Working predominantly with ceramic objects, unfired clay, earth, fabric, plant life, wood, and geologic samples; Richards looks to illumine the vibrancy of different types of raw matter. She draws links between our own, small mammalian rhythms, our everyday gestures and objects, and the enveloping, elemental flux of wider nature.

She employs simple, often repetitive activities that bring a human body into contact with organic potencies, through exploration, quiet observation, movement and making. These rhythms of being and doing are approached with an interest in their potential to colour and adjust the abstract space of thought, and facilitate a connection with the earth in the context of digitally-saturated societies.
