Event description
New Zealand is seeing a growing number of children who are experiencing increasing levels of mental illness.

About this event

In the last two years New Zealand has seen a significant rise in children displaying significant levels of distress, aggression and mental illness. This is being reported in children as young as five! Many of the methods used to help adults do not for work for children because their brain development is not the same as an adult. In this workshop you will learn some of the reasons why mental illness is rising in children and a number of ways to manage this.

Key learnings:

How does mental illness present in children?

Understand the significant stages of child brain development and what this means for help and treatment.

How has the lack of free play in children contributed to this?

How to offer wrap around support for the whole family.

In-depth look at sensory processing issues

How to manage sleep disruptions in children?

What are some of the early warning signs of autism in children?

What types of therapies and treatments are suitable for children?

The workshop will be delivered by Michael Hempseed. Michael Hempseed is the author of the book Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community.

Michael has spoken extensively throughout New Zealand to a wide and varied range of audiences, such as New Zealand Defence Force medics, doctors, social workers, businesses and many parents and teachers. In 2019 he delivered almost 200 seminars throughout NZ.

Although he speaks on “dark topics” the participants at his seminars say they walk away feeling inspired and hopeful and they even have a few laughs along the way. Many non-professionals come to his seminars and they say they learn a lot. But, professionals and experts in the field, such as medical doctors, psychologists and counsellors, also say they learn a lot and they are exposed to research they did not know about.

If this event is postponed we will rebook in person as soon as possible.

The volunteer tickets are intended for people such as FENZ volunteers, unpaid youth workers or other volunteers.
