The New Zealand Asia Institute at the University of Auckland is pleased to host David Mahon, Executive Chairman of Mahon China, for a public lecture on the evolving dynamics of US–China trade and their implications for New Zealand’s foreign policy and commercial engagement.
Based in Beijing since 1984, David is New Zealand’s most experienced China-based corporate adviser. Through Mahon China, he has supported leading multinationals, including Fonterra, a2 Milk, Zespri, and Les Mills, in navigating China’s regulatory, political, and commercial environment. His insights are informed by four decades of observing China’s economic reforms and its integration into the global system, alongside his deep practical experience advising both governments and businesses.
This presentation will explore:
- The recalibration of US–China trade relations and their impact on global supply chains.
- China’s domestic policy shifts and how these are reshaping the investment landscape.
- The rise of “friendshoring” and its implications for smaller economies reliant on open markets.
- Strategic considerations for New Zealand firms engaging with China amid shifting geopolitical currents.
The session offers a rare perspective at the intersection of trade, diplomacy, and business strategy—providing insights of direct relevance to academics, policymakers, and New Zealand’s business community alike.
