Join us for an evening of inspiring kōrero from presenters who've been leading Kaupapa Māori projects across Aotearoa. Our guest speakers are experts in their fields, specialising in papakāinga, rāhui, and rangahau, bringing with them extensive experience grounded in matauranga Māori. They'll be sharing their knowledge, expertise, and showcasing examples of current and recent iwi and hapū initiatives at this community event.

About our presenters

Tammy Tauroa
Co-Chair, Ngāti Kuri Trust Board & Director, Te Ara Whānui Research Centre

Tammy is a respected leader in kaupapa Māori research and iwi development. With over 13 years at the University of Waikato, she specialised in kaupapa Māori research before founding her own consultancy, Miere Ltd, in 2019. Tammy is passionate about iwi, hapū and Māori organisational advancement, offering expertise in Māori project design and strategic leadership across numerous boards and panels.

In 2018, she completed an MBIE Placement with Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, establishing the Manawanui Research Centre and leading a pioneering papakāinga model within Waikato District. She now serves as a Māori Housing Advisor and was instrumental in developing Mana Kāinga, a national Māori housing leadership programme for Te Matapihi.

Tammy currently co-chairs the Ngāti Kuri Trust Board and oversees a 5-year MBIE Endeavour-funded research programme centred on Rangitāhua (Kermadec Islands). She contributes to over seven science research projects with partners including Manaaki Whenua, the University of Auckland, and Pūrangakura. As Biodiversity Lead for Te Tini a Tāne, she champions iwi-led environmental initiatives. At the heart of her work is a deep commitment to her three tamariki, her whānau, and the future of her iwi.

Dr. Apanui Skipper

Apanui is an expert in Māori environment knowledge of weather and climate. He is a specialist in Indigenous weather lore and leads the Pou Rangi team who specialises in mātauranga kōkōrangi (astronomy), matapae huarere (weather prediction), āhuarangi (climate), maramataka and te reo Māori.

Herearoha Skipper

Herearoha manages major research projects in the fields of Taiao, Hauora, Mātauranga, and te Reo Māori. She provides leadership in kaupapa Māori research that promote the vision, values, and aspirations of whānau, hapū, iwi. She brings with her a suite of skills and experience to lead an exciting era of transformation.

Prof. Kura Paul-Burke

Kura is a Mātai Moana Marine Researcher at the University of Waikato, is a Māori marine ecologist, scientific diver, skipper and transdisciplinary researcher with extensive knowledge in mātauranga moana to assist successful restoration of taonga species and spaces.
