Design Assembly is excited to bring you a day of conversations dedicated to high school design teachers.

3 industry speakers, 3 burning topics for high-school education:

- Coding or designing

- Finding the solution or understanding the problem

Featuring Raul Sarrot (Designer, strategist and coach at Fresh Fish), Matt Gould (Director at Lushai, co-founder of UX Gym and co-founder of UX Homegrown design conference) and Nicole Arnett Phillips (Designer, Typographer, Publisher, Writer and Printmaker)

Over the day you will hear from our three industry speakers and have the opportunity to ask all of your burning questions.

Is it pointless to teach kids to code if you don't teach them to design as well?

For several years now we have been told that kids need to learn to code. We're told it's essential for the economy, and essential for the development of our children. And I'm all for it, mainly because it's fun, but also because it demystifies something that can seem intimidating and obtuse.

But in the rush to teach to code, we are putting a lot of emphasis on making, but (with a few notable exceptions) little (or no) emphasis on making something that is valuable. We're teaching kids to make but not how to design.

This talk will offer some practical design principles and techniques that can be applied whenever you are making anything that is going to be used by another person, with the hope that alongside introducing people to the pure joy of making, we can introduce the joy making something great.

Creative Problem Solving (an introduction to Design Thinking)

This talk is an introduction Design Thinking, a powerful human-centered methodology that help us tap into our natural abilities of solving problems creatively. This practical and easy-to-learn method goes beyond traditional problem-solving to offers people (particularly non-designers) empathy and ideation techniques that recover our natural ability to be curious and creative. The outcome is to empower participants to be able to rapidly understand other people’s needs and to have a set of tools to easily come up with game-changing creative ideas to any given problem.


The value of analogue practice
With Nicole Arnett Phillips

Today, designers spend a lot of time pushing pixels - everything is fast, flexible and clean. {cmd+Z} is just one of the many benefits to working digital. When we make a mistake or encounter a problem in our design, we can efficiently erase the error. This fast paced digital technology removes the unpredictable, and unexpected from our creative process, it minimises the room for human and mechanical error, reducing our risk of failure, but in doing so limits experimentation and also quarantines us from learning opportunities.

Nicole's talk will focus on the value of analogue in her design practice and how "imperfect" mediums like drawing and printmaking provide occasions to learn and grow outside of the safety net of command z to undo.

During her presentation, Nicole will guide participants through a quick drawing exercise to demonstrate how analogue craftsmanship demands you to be resourceful and provides fertile ground for the production of authentic and exciting design outcomes.

Nicole believes as teachers, our mission should be to promote the value of analogue to digital natives as a mechanism not only for them to build creative confidence, experiment and learn but also to differentiate themselves from other "digerati.”
