Data Visualization: An immersive introduction to communicating data through visualisation (Wellington)

Data visualization is a powerful way to present evidence for decision-making, or to tell your story in an engaging and compelling way. If you’re looking at exploring new methods to produce innovative and engaging data visualisations, this is a great opportunity to accelerate your skills.

Harkanwal Singh from Elements Data Studio will take you on a journey from understanding what makes a great visualisation, to how to communicate the 'story' in your analysis in a way that stimulates your audience

What to expect:

The course is structured into 3 seperate sessions across two separate days (Thursday 7 June - Friday 8 June). The Thursday afternoon session is an overview of the thinking and concepts behind data visualisation, the Friday morning and afternoon are practical sessions exploring tools to create data visualisation (you can chose to select 1 session or all 3).

You’re welcome to attend one or both of the Day 2 sessions, however they are dependent on the first session on Day 1 to ensure you gain the most value from the sessions.

There will also be complimentary morning and afternoon tea refreshments provided for each of these sessions so you don't go hungry :)

Day 1/Session 1: Thursday 7 June 1 - 5:00pm

An overview of the thinking and concepts behind data visualisation.

- Telling Stories with Data
- Data Sketching (thinking with hands)
- Principles of data visualisation (shape, colour and context).

Day 2/Session 2: Friday 8 June 9 - 12pm

- Morning: Visualisation with tools (without requiring any programming skills). (3hrs)

Day 3/Session 3: Friday 8 June 1 - 5.30pm
- Afternoon: Tidy data analysis: An introduction to exploratory data analysis with R with a case study approach and a brief overview to visualisation on the web. (3hrs)

What to bring and download:

• Own laptop or tablet device.

• For Session 2 on the second day, it'll be useful to have a Google account for Google Spreadsheets and Tabelau downloaded (trial version would do).

• For Session 3 (the second session on Day 2), please have R Studio downloaded (free version).
