Event description

Description

New Zealanders live, work, and study in an era of global engagement. Our ability to internationalise requires us to understand our customers and markets.

Language is at the heart of these relationships.

No longer considered an extra to a candidate’s CV, languages are acknowledged as an essential value-add to businesses seeking to internationalise authentically and sustainably. A recent nationwide UMR poll, Attitudes Towards the Asia-Pacific, confirmed this. Most Kiwis (82% of those surveyed) support New Zealand children learning a language from the Asia-Pacific, even if it comes at the expense of one of the more traditional offerings.

Whether you are a SME exploring new trade opportunities in North Asia or an established Kiwi firm with an international client base, the value of language skills cannot be underestimated.

Lawyer and Mandarin-speaker Nathalie Harrington is ideally-placed to discuss the power of language acquisition for New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses—and the pitfalls of ignoring this key capability. A recipient of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia (PMSA), Nathalie has just returned from an eight-week International Chinese Language Programme at National Taiwan University in Taipei.

Join Nathalie and the North Asia CAPE for an evening of anecdotes, insights and examples of the role language plays in New Zealand’s ever-growing engagement on the global stage.

A question and answer session will follow Nathalie's presentation.
