Emily Mwila - Homecoming concert
Event Information
About this event
Returning from New York for one concert only. Emily Mwila will be performing a repertoire of Opera, Artsongs, & other musical gems.
A former semi-finalist in the New Zealand Lexus Songquest, Emily completed a Masters in Vocal Studies at Mannes school of performing arts in New York, where she studied under renowned American Tenor William Burden. (Also a tutor at The Julliard school of music). Since finishing her studies earlier this year, Emily has been performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as part of the cast of the Gershwin's Musical Porgy & Bess.
Before leaving for New York, Emily played the lead role of Susannah in The Marriage of Figaro, with Wellingtons Eternity Opera Company.
Tim Stevenson from Theatre Review wrote of her performance:
"The standout exception..is Emily Mwila, who storms the role of Susannah from her first moment on stage & maintains the same high level of command & vocal beauty throughout the night. Her strong acting & superb voice makes a major contribution to the success of the performance."
Award-winning Baritone Tim Burrell will also be performing, both as a solo artist, and in duet with Emily Mwila.
They will be accompanied by pianist Moira Pascoe, who recently completed her masters in collaborative piano at Auckland University where she accompanied the University Choir as Assistant director.
Emily's first concert at the Thomas Brown Gallery left a lasting impression on everyone who attended. Complications due to the Covid pandemic have meant that the 2nd concert has had to be postponed more than once. Now finally the much anticipated concert can go ahead. It will be a night to remember.
