A four day workshop as part of Summer School 2017
Delving into the wonderful world that is wax, Nicki will guide you through the core encaustic techniques using beeswax and damar resin. Encaustic is an exciting and alchemical medium which predates oil painting and was used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians alike. Explore smooth and textural painting, layering, fusing, embedding, incising, embossing, image transfer, and drawing on wax. Inquire into and develop a strong sense of what is possible with this exciting medium.
About Nicki Stewart:
Painting since 1998 and with a background in textile and interior design, Nicki has developed her current work in encaustic from the desire to use a more sustainable and organic medium. Image, process, and chosen material all play significant roles in the metaphoric formulation of her work. Being captivated by the history of encaustic art and the broad potential for its application, Nicki’s recent work has seen progression towards a more 3 dimensional approach incorporating the use of ceramics, stone and textiles. She currently works and runs encaustic workshops from her studio in the South Wairarapa.
