Description

Presenter: Dr Jenny Ritchie, Associate Professor, School of Education, Victoria University

Abstract: Traditional hierarchical ways of operating in education and elsewhere confine and define the freedoms of creativity and cultural and emotional expression that are accessible to young children. In operating with a dispositionally oriented curriculum, with core principles of empowerment and relationships, how can we affirm children’s rights to express their feelings and needs, and enable them to develop a repertoire and vocabulary of emotional expression? How can we honour the different cultural values that express dispositions of emotional wellbeing? In this presentation Jenny will discuss some of her research and writing and invite discussion on these ideas.

Bio: Dr Jenny Ritchie has been involved in the early childhood care and education sector since the 1970s, as a childcare worker, kindergarten teacher, parent, teacher educator, education researcher, and grandparent. She is currently an Associate Professor in Te Puna Akopai, the School of Education, at Te Whare Wānanga o te Ūpoko o te Ika, Victoria University of Wellington. Her research and teaching has focused on: understanding how to apply a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi within early childhood and teacher education: pedagogies that affirm and support children’s cultural and emotional wellbeing: and exploring ways in which applying Māori conceptualisations can enhance pedagogies that support and care for our planet

Everyone welcome - this is a free event as it's in association with our AGM.
