Event description
Entrepreneurship and Academics – conflict or synergy?

About this Event

It’s now an official trend – universities are a place where innovation and entrepreneurship should thrive! Universities are creating “maker spaces” and adapting incentives, sponsoring and supporting student entrepreneurship groups and training programmes, and adapting their research investment to help spur the growth of new ideas and reap the revenues the successful ones can generate.

In this seminar, I will share some experiences from the rapid – and sometimes successful – growth of commercially-facing projects in the Photon Factory, and explore the good, the bad and the ugly of merging academics and entrepreneurship.

Cather Simpson is a Professor of Physics and Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland. There, she started the Photon Factory, a laser centre whose mission is to exploit exotic, ultrashort pulsed lasers to enable cross-disciplinary research from the fundamental to the applied. Cather’s research explores how materials convert light into more useful forms of energy. Agriculture is a recent focus, where her work has led to two international award winning companies.

Recent accolades include an Ako Aotearoa Tertiary Teaching Excellence award, a Silicon Valley Forum 1st-place AgTech medal, and in 2016 Simpson was named Primary Industries Champion, Baldwins Researcher Entrepreneur and BNZ Supreme Research Commercialisation winner. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi and former President of the New Zealand Institute of Physics.

This talk is part of the 2019 ABI Tuesday Seminar Series. The seminars are all open to the public, and there will be a new talk each Tuesday, from 4-5pm, held at the Auckland Bioengineering House, 70 Symonds St.
