Auckland Fringe Festival 2021 presents
EVENING! WITH JIMMY APPLAUSE
Visionary artist Zheng Nuanzhi presents the comeback of her boisterous talk-show satire, Evening! With Jimmy Applause to Auckland Fringe Festival 2021.
Playing at Garnet Station on the 19th and 20th March, Evening! With Jimmy Applause channels this pandemic-era of talk shows in this campy character study on celebrity, white masculinity and queer identity. Garnet Station is transformed into a live studio, taking audiences for a peek behind the curtain for television at its finest: big egos colliding, nervous breakdowns, and the sacrifice of self for public adoration.
Now back in the studio after these Extraordinary Times, the much-loved presenter is bringing Evening! with Jimmy Applause’s classic combination of chat, anecdotes from famous people and music, while grappling with maintaining relevancy and meaning in the world.
Created by Zheng Nuanzhi, a Tāmaki Makaurau-based interdisciplinary artist. Graduating from Elam with first class Honours, her work centres frequently on feminism, race, queer theory, and pop culture. This presents itself in many mediums, such as videomaking, writing, drawing and craft. She has previously performed Evening! with Jimmy Applause as a performance piece at Auckland Artweek 2020, and shown at Gus Fisher Gallery's The Booth.
Zheng Nuanzhi brings this absurd satire to life - solo, with Ash Raju (An Organ of Soft Tissue, My Heart Goes Thadak Thadak) playing a very special guest. Produced by creative-duo Alyssa Medel (PINAY, Fresh off the Page) and John Khew (A Very Filipino Christmas Show).
