Event description

Description

The First Year Science Educators Colloquium is a two day forum for tertiary science educators who teach first-year papers to discuss some of the challenges they face and explore solutions, with a goal of delivery a first-year experience that is second to none.

These challenges include:

  • Extremely large class sizes

  • Teaching ‘service’ courses in which students show little interest but need to take as a requirement for another major

  • Students have a large diversity of career-aspirations, aptitude and previous experience in science;

  • students may struggle with the transition to tertiary level science, and struggle to adapt to the University systems for instruction and assessment;

  • Courses are often under-represented by female students;

  • Completion rates and academic grade distributions are often lower for Māori and Pasifika students.

Day one: Bridging the Gap

These sessions will focus on how to support student to successfully transition from secondary to tertiary education. We encourage secondary school teachers to attend this day.

Day two: Inclusive Learning

The second day will focus on embracing diversity in the classroom, and strategies to ensure all students are equally catered to.
