Event description

Description

Dr Carmel Bendon is a writer, academic and presenter on all things medieval. She has a PhD in Medieval Literature and a 1st Class honours in Early English, both from Macquarie University where she was a lecturer in English Literature.

She will use her medieval expertise to talk about Aches, Pains and Leeches: Medieval Medicine.

Ointments made of bear fat, and poultices of moss? Medicines made of herbs and precious stones and crystals? Surgery without anaesthetic? They’re all part of the weird and wonderful approach to sickness and healing in medieval times.

Dr Bendon is also concentrating on writing fiction. Grasping at Water is her first novel and she will also talk about this book and its marvellous mix of mystery, history and discovery that will prompt you to wonder about the way you see life.
