Genes, Diets, and Lives - Dr Giles Yeo, Cambridge Obesity Expert and BBC Pr...
Event Information
Description
What do we know about genes, diet and obesity?
In his BBC series “Why Are We Getting So Fat?” (currently on TVNZ OnDemand), Dr Giles Yeo looks empathetically at people's experiences with obesity, and relates this to his expertise in genetic predisposition to weight problems.
In this free public seminar Dr Yeo will talk about how our genetic predispositions interact with the environments we live and eat in. He will look at what this means for efforts to tackle the major health issues of obesity and diabetes affecting populations in New Zealand and around the world.
Dr Yeo is Principal Research Associate, Director of Genomics/Transcriptomics, in Cambridge University’s Department of Clinical Biochemistry. He is also President of the British Society for Neuroendocrinology.
Anyone interested in diabetes, obesity, diet and genetics should find this to be an engaging and rewarding talk.
Dr Yeo is visiting New Zealand thanks to the Maurice Wilkins Centre, in association with Diabetes NZ. The MWC is one of New Zealand’s Centre’s of Research Excellence and has a major research focus in understanding the causes of type-2 diabetes and obesity in New Zealand populations. Diabetes NZ is a charity that represents and supports people with diabetes, and educates and informs people about diabetes, its treatment, prevention, and cure.
