Event description
Visit the old Glenhope Railway Station, currently undergoing restoration by the Department of Conservation on this 'tag-along' tour.

About this Event

Glenhope Railway Station was the terminus of the Nelson Railway for 43 years from 1912 - 1955. The station was in private hands until 2011 when purchased by the Department of Conservation to ensure its long-term survival. Since that time DOC has been undertaking restoration work and is looking to progressively enhance the site so that it can be enjoyed by visitors. Come along and see this work in progress and contribute your own ideas on preserving this crucial part of Nelson's Heritage and New Zealand's Railway History.

The field trip will take the form of a 'tag along' tour using participant's own vehicles. The group will meet at the Flat Rock Cafe in Kohartu at 10am for an introduction over tea and coffee. From this point we can car pool as we are returning to this point later in the day. From Kohatu we will visit the Kiwi Station Museum at Tapawera and then travel down the Tadmor Valley, the location of the railway line to Glenhope. At Glenhope, we will see inside the station and talk about the history of the Station, the restoration work in progress and what might happen to the site in the future. Participants will make their own way back to Nelson by approximately 4pm (via State Highway 6) or you can optionally extend your trip to include a trip to the Kawitiri siding (a further 5 mins on from Glenhope) and walk through the Kawitiri Railway Tunnel.
