Event description

Description

All around the world user groups and communities want to learn about Azure and Cloud Computing!

Mark Russinovich ready for Global Azure Bootcamp 2019

On April 27, 2019, all communities will come together once again in the sixth great Global Azure Bootcamp event! Each user group will organize their own one day deep dive class on Azure the way they see fit and how it works for their members. The result is that thousands of people get to learn about Azure and join together online under the social hashtag #GlobalAzure!

Organised by @AucklandAzure and @NSDNUG.

The event is a full-day event with both Dev and IT Pro tracks. We have arranged all day tea and coffee, a pastry for morning tea and a light lunch. Full details are on our event web site.

Some important messages from the organizers to our awesome attendees:

If you can't make it:

We completely understand that sometimes life gets in the way of being able to attend events like this. This is completely and none of us would ever hold it against you if you couldn't make it. But what we do ask is that if you think you can't make it, please cancel your registration so we can open it up for someone else. Our space is extremely limited and there is usually a very long waiting list of people who would love to take that spot.

What you need to bring on the day:

To get the greatest benefit on the day you'll want to be able to try out some of the labs and workshops. To do this you'll need the following:

A reasonably modern laptop computer with Wifi (if it is manufactured in the last 8 years you should be fine). You should bring your power supply for your laptop too.

Your laptop should be running:

  • Windows 10 or above or
  • Ubuntu Linux Desktop 12.04 or above or
  • MacOS Sierra or above

Google Chrome OS might work, but we don't have any experience in this and if you get stuck we'll not likely be able to provide assistance.

What Software should be installed on your Laptop:

  1. The latest version of Google Chrome - download it from here https://www.google.com/chrome/ . Yes, other browsers will work (Edge, Safari, Firefox), but if you want to use those then you MUST ensure you are using the latest version. We may not be able to help you if you get stuck and you're running IE7 or some other ancient or unusual browser.
  2. The latest version of the amazing Visual Studio Code editor. It is free, it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and is by far the best tool for building things on Azure - bar none.
  3. You can use any other tools you feel comfortable with, but the organizers may not have experience with them and therefore might not be able to help you if you get stuck.

Go ahead, save your self some time and effort on the day and get these things installed.

The following tools will be useful (for any Azure user), but are not required:

  • PowerShell Core (cross-platform open source version of Windows PowerShell)
  • Azure PowerShell Modules - A great way to automate Azure through PowerShell. Works on Windows PowerShell and PowerShell Core, so can be used in Windows, MacOS and Linux.
  • Visual Studio 2017 (or 2019 if you're trying out the Beta)
  • Azure Storage Explorer - A free tool for working with Azure Storage
  • Az CLI - another way of automating Azure. Uses Python, so you'd need Python 3.7 installed.

What Azure Account Should you have:

You don't need an Azure account, Microsoft is kindly providing Free Azure Passes if you don't already have a personal Azure account.

If you do already have a free private Azure account with some credit then you can use that also.

If you have access to an Azure account through your place of work, we advise you avoid using this as you will likely be limited to what you are able to do. Plus, you don't want to accidentaly go spending $$$ on your corporate Azure account unless you've been athorized to do so. In this case, you'll want to either sign up for a free Azure acount against a Microsoft Live account. If you don't have a Live account, go here to create one.
