Description

You are invited!

Come and hear John Mathews, Professor of Strategy at Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Sydney, speak about current developments with China's energy strategy, providing insights for New Zealand. For the past several years John has focused on the greening of industry with an emphasis on the role of China. His new book Global Green Shift was published this year by Anthem Press in London (www.globalgreenshift.org)

John will present evidence of a global green transition under way – but contrary to popular perception – one that is not driven by the United States, the European Union or Japan. He argues that China is driving the green transition, very much for its own reasons of enhancing its energy security and cleaning up its deteriorating urban environment. This China strategy has global implications.

The event is hosted by the BusinessNZ Energy Council in conjunction with the Energy Centre, the University of Auckland Business School. We will welcome you with drinks and nibbles from 12.30 pm. John will kick off his speech at 1.00 pm.

About the Speaker

John Mathews specialises in catch-up strategies of firms and countries in East Asia, publishing widely in this field. From 2009 to 2012 he held concurrently the Eni Chair of Competitive Dynamics and Global Strategy at LUISS Gardi Carli University in Rome. For the past several years Professor Mathews has focused on the greening of industry with an emphasis on the role of China. His article, “Manufacture renewables to build energy security” was published in Nature in September 2014 (co-authored with Hao Tan). In 2015 his book, Greening of Capitalism: How Asia is Driving the Next Great Transformation, was published by Stanford University Press. He had a new book published in late 2015 by Palgrave Pivot, China’s Renewable Energy Revolution and its Global Significance, again co-authored with Dr Hao Tan. In 2016 Prof Mathews and Dr Tan published a second article in Nature, on China’s circular economy and its lessons. The year 2017 sees publication of Professor Mathews’ new book, Global Green Shift, by Anthem Press in London (http://www.anthempress.com/global-green-shift-pb).
