Going super heavy - the end of the periodic table of elements

The first periodic table of the elements was proposed in 1869. It was compiled by arranging the elements in ascending order of atomic weight and grouped by chemical properties. At that time it was not known how high in atomic weight the elements could go before becoming too unstable and decaying. But in the last decade we have seen the production of new elements up to nuclear charge 118. So how heavy can elements go and what can chemists do with such exotic elements? Where does the periodic table end?

Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger FRSNZ

Peter Schwerdtfeger currently holds a chair in Theoretical Chemistry at Massey University and serves as Director of the Centre of Theoretical Chemistry and Physics. His research is diverse ranging from theoretical chemistry and physics to computer science and mathematics. He studied both chemistry and mathematics at Stuttgart University where he received his PhD in theoretical chemistry. He then held a position as a software analyst before receiving a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation which enabled him to undertake research in New Zealand and Australia. In 2003 he moved to Massey University at Albany and later joined the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study where he still remains.

He has received many awards, notably the Prince and Princess of Wales Science Award, Humboldt Research Prize, Fukui Medal and 2014 Rutherford medal.
