About this event

Got To Get Out's first ever trek to trek to the incredible ancient Inca Ruins in PERU!

We are travelling 5th August and will be back 22nd August. Are you available? If so, read on..

You get a full 15 days of adventure for a flat-fee all-inclusive cost departing Auckland, so all you need to worry about is having the right trekking clothes and being fit.

You have 3 months of hill climbing if you aren't in peak shape!

Flying to our adventure:

First, fifteen of us will fly with Lan Argentina Airways from Auckland to Lima via Santiago. This in itself will be a thrill for Got To Get Out'ers who may not have been here before.

We will all get to meet at Auckland Airport, circle of names (if we haven't already met in the training hikes and Facebook group), and then board together.

We will meet our Intrepid guides and get a guided tour of Lima, the capital city of Peru.

The trek:

During the next eight days you’ll be hiking the Choquequirao Trek (Google it!), a lesser-known, longer & harder alternative of Machu Piccu. The route we have chosen is 'less of the main tourist route' and more in keeping with Got To Get Out's ethos of having real off the beaten track adventure.

Our expert trekking company Intrepid Travel have the following to say about this trek:

"Move over Machu Picchu – this epic trek takes you to the real ‘lost city’ of the Incas, surrounded by dense cloud forest deep in the Andes. Take your boots further with a challenging 8-day hike (*longer than traditional Machu Picchu*) moving through high altitudes, over mega mountain passes and along a quiet trail leading to the well-preserved Inca city ruins of Choquequirao. The site is three times larger than Machu Picchu, and you’re given a full day to explore. Think "secluded and not for the faint-hearted"

There are 6 ruins to explore, and 8 days of actual trekking.

During this trek we will traverse the breathtaking Yanama Pass, which is the highest point of the Choquequirao Trail. From 4660 metres (15,290 feet) above sea level, take in the splendour of southern Peru’s famous mountain scenery namely the snow-dusted Vilcabamba range.

Note, this altitude is only slightly lower than Mt Everest BaseCamp we trekked to earlier this year!

The ‘Cradle of Gold’ ruins are made up of ceremonial platforms, palaces, terraces, ritual baths and temples dedicated to the sun, moon and earth spirit, Pachamama. The route and ruins is described as quieter and far bigger than Machu Picchu.

Each day generally consists of 7–10 hours of walking (uphill and downhill), with stops for snacks and lunch.
