Napier Art Deco Festival 2021 is proud to present the Great Deco Bake Off.

Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned baking competition?

Inspired by classic village fête baking, take part in our Deco bake-off and show off your baking skills. Entries will be judged on Taste, Appearance, Execution and Creativity. Categories are Pies, Scones, Muffins and Cakes.

Entries can be submitted from 2.00pm onwards. Judging takes place at 2.30pm Festival Garden Bar, Lower Lawns, Marine Parade, Napier.

Categories are Adults (18 and over), Youth (13 years – 18 years) and Child (12 and under). There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places for each category. For more information and full competition rules, contact

Who Can Enter?

Any and all people are welcome to enter the bake off! Kids and Adults of any age are welcome to participate. The age categories are as follows; Adults (18 and over), Youth (13 years – 18 years), and Child (12 and under).

Both inexperienced and experienced bakers are eligible to enter, but all baked goods must be made in a home kitchen.

Contestants any work individually or in a team however prizes will be awarded to 1 member/team only NOT each individually.

What Can I Win?

Three finalists will be selected for each category. One finalist from each category, representing first place, will win prizes supported by the Napier City Council. Those placing in second and third place in each category will receive prizes according to their respective placement.

What Are The Categories?

All baked entries must fit on of the four category descriptions.

- Pies: This category is intended for baked pies (fruit, custard, etc..)

- Muffins: This category is intended for muffins; these can be savoury or sweet.

- Cakes: This category is intended for baked cakes. Cakes may be single or multilayer.

How Do I Enter?

Registration is allowed on the day of the event.

Check-in is at 2:00pm at the Festival Garden Bar, Lower Lawns, Marine Parade, Napier. Registration will close 5 minutes before judging takes place, it is recommended you arrive earlier to ensure you are registered before the event begin.

Participants may enter any recipe and it does not need to be an original recipe created by the entrant. Recipes may come from cookbooks, magazines websites, or any other means. Please bring a copy of your recipe as this must be submitted with your baked good(s).

The recipe must list all the ingredients, quantities and the preparation instructions. Entrant’s name, email address and phone number will be printed on the back side of all the pages. (All recipes and baked goods will become the property of the Napier Art Deco Trust and will not be returned)

Submissions must be home cooked (not store bought).

Please DO NOT submit anything that requires refrigeration as the event will be held outside.

All entries are to be submitted as a whole (complete pie, cake, loaf, etc..) or in the quantity of a half dozen or more (for muffins, scones and mini pies).

Participants should bring their own serving utensils (ex: cake knife, pie server, etc…) The Art Deco Trust will provide plates, forks and napkins for the judges on behalf of the event sponsors Napier City Council.

All entries are preferred to be submitted on paper plate or recyclable container. In the case that it is not suitable for this, (ex. Baked fruit pies), all containers used to submit the entry are the responsibility of the entrant. It is the entrant’s responsibility to pick up their container immediately following the announcement of winners at 2:30pm. All containers left afterward will be submitted to the lost and found. Neither the organisers of this event nor any of our sponsors are in any way responsible for the distribution of your containers. In addition, all entries should be presented in a sealed container or in a new Ziploc bag or a new bag with a twist tie. We encourage the use of biodegradable containers, Ziplocs and/or alternative seal bags.

How Will Recipes Be Judged?

All entries must meet the requirements of the category entered. Recipes not meeting contest entry criteria will be disqualified. Entries will be judged in the following criteria:

- Presentation (max 5 points)

- Consistency (max 5 points)

- Flavour (max 5 points)

- Creativity (max 5 points)

Maximum total of 20 points are possible.

How Will Finalists Be Selected?

Judges are required to taste all entries. Each judge will complete a judging sheet which will indicate each entry’s score. Each criterion will require a score of 1 to 5 dependent on that criterion. A combined score will be calculated to indicate the final scoring placement.

What Happens If I Win?

Selected finalists will be notified after a 30-minute judging period, representing an approximate time of 2:30pm on Saturday 20th February. All contestants are expected to be physically present for the announcement and accept their prize at that time. If the contestant or a representative for the contestant is not present, they will be notified by email.

Finalists will be photographed which may be used for future promotional materials for the Great Deco Bake Off or The Art Deco Festival.
