Event description
A virtual Grooming Competition based in New Zealand

About this event

National Dog Groomers Association of New Zealand proudly presents

Groomalong 2021 virtual live grooming competition.

We will be running this event in REAL TIME over zoom so all you need is your dogs, your tools and table, your device to log into zoom and a stable internet connection.

This will be run as a normal grooming competition but online.

Judge to be announced as they become available utilising some of the best talents from around the world.

CONTEST RULES Groomalong 2021 (last updated 23/8/21)National Dog Groomers Association of New Zealand

These rules are for the above event and the judge’s decision on the day will be final, based on their interpretation of the rules, without prejudice. Please read and understand them. Please also check the "last updated" date to ensure you have the most up to date copy.

DATE: Saturday 16th October and Sunday 17th October 2021.

ENTRIES: Available through Eventbrite. Entries close Thursday 14th October 10 am NZ.

All times, dates and pricing is based in New Zealand and it is up to the competitor to ensure they have the times, dates and pricing correct.

No refunds will be allowed after the close of entries, unless NDGANZ deems them to be extraordinary circumstances.

FORMAT: This competition is a virtual one. It will mostly be run as a normal competition would, except that while we expect most contestants will be from New Zealand, there will be other contestants and judges from around the world.

Each contestant will need a stable internet connection and a login for Zoom. They will put their phone or other device on a tripod or other stable area, so we can see the entire timed grooms.

Each session will have its own Zoom link and judges and spectators can sign into one or more of the sessions to watch competitors in each session.

Due to the uncertainty of COVID lockdowns, we will be running a format that can continue regardless of being able to move around the country. In this way, we are reasonably confident we will not need to postpone or cancel due to COVID.

Participants may groom in their own home, salon or in a group setting. We do encourage camaraderie amongst groomers, so if it is at all possible, we encourage you to meet up at local salons to groom together (but individually of course).

All groomers must have a helper to comb through the dog for the virtual judge and show areas of the dog as requested by the judge. This will be easier in a group setting, as one person can do all of this.

ENTRIES: Each contestant may enter up to five dogs.

In each of the five sessions below there will be two classes running at the same time.

Entry fees will be NZ$28 per class (entries are only accepted through Eventbrite).

SESSIONS: There will be 5 sessions available, each with two classes to choose from. Please read the rules that apply to your dog and check that you are entering it into the correct class.

There shall be one class winner for each of the classes. (Further placings will depend on how many entrants there are in each class).

Second place will be awarded in any class with 4 or more entrants.

Third place will be awarded in any class with 6 or more entrants.

Fourth place will be awarded in any class with 8 or more entrant.s

An overall Best in Show winner will be decided from all first-place winners.

Certificates will be emailed to the winners and ribbons will be sent free nationally (printed after the event) or may be sent internationally at winners’ cost.

Cash prize amounts will be determined closer to the date, based on the number of entries in each class, and will be paid after the event. At least 50% of the entry fees will be split fairly between all the prize winners. The more entries there are per class, the more prize money will be available.

Please be aware there is unlikely to be much time between classes to prep the next dog, so ensure to choose your classes carefully, so you can produce your very best work.

After each class, competitors should plan a minimum of 30 to 60 extra minutes for judges to view the grooms online before putting the dog away.

Depending on the size of each class, the organisers may split the classes into two or more levels

according to experience.

A spreadsheet of dogs entered into each class will be updated regularly online, so competitors can see how many dogs there are in each class and when they are split into levels.

1. SALON FREESTYLE: Any coated purebred dog that is groomed in a non-breed trim, and crossbreeds in any style, may be in this class. A crossbred dog must NOT look like a purebred dog (i.e. you cannot use a Bichon x Maltese which looks exactly like a Bichon and put it into a Bichon trim as it would be an unfair advantage).

All clipping and scissoring tools are acceptable in this class.

The time limit shall be 1 hour and 45 minutes.

(Does not include traditional double coated breeds such as Pomeranians, Collies, Spitz breeds etc.).

2. DOUBLE COATED BREEDS: Any double coated breed dog that is trimmed into either a breed standard or teddy bear style to suit each dog. Lion trims are also acceptable in this class.

Small dogs will be allowed one and a half hour, miniature dogs will be allowed one hour 45 minutes and midi dogs will be given two hours.

(Includes traditional double coated breeds such as Pomeranians, Collies, Spitz breeds etc)

3. ALL OTHER PURE BREEDS:

Bichon - two hour time limit.

Kerry Blue -

Soft Coated Wheaten -

Lowchen -

This list will be added to as entries are received.

(Does not include Schnauzers, which are in the Terrier class)

(Does not include double coated dogs, which are in the double coated class)

4. OODLES AND ASIAN FUSION : Includes any breed of ‘oodle’, clipped or stripped into a generic oodle style, and any breed put into an Asian Fusion trim.

Small/miniature dogs will be allowed one hour and 45 minutes, midi dogs will be given two hours and large dogs get two and a half hours.

5. POODLES - STYLED: Includes Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles in an attractive style.

Toy Poodles (for contest purposes under 11 inches at the withers) will be allotted one hour and 45 minutes.

Miniature Poodles (for contest purposes over 11 inches and under 16 inches at the withers) will be allowed two hours.

Standard Poodles will be given two and a half hours.

The face, feet and tail should be completed during the above timeframe, but should the groomer wish to do the feet only previous to the competition, a 15 minute time penalty will be deducted from the above times.

No time penalty will be given for additional clipping over scissoring, but may be a consideration during final judging. For example, any poodle in a lamb trim may have the pattern set in with blades or comb attachments prior to finishing with scissors, but should two essentially identical dogs be presented at the end, the judge may favour the fully scissored trim.

6. GUNDOG AND TERRIERS – CLIPPED: Includes all Gundog and Terrier breeds that will be trimmed with clippers. Small Terriers, such as Westies, Scotties, Wire Fox Terriers, will be allowed one hour and 45 minutes.

Cocker Spaniels will be allowed one hour and 45 minutes.

Larger Terriers such as Airedales will be given two hours.

7. GUNDOG AND TERRIERS – STRIPPED: Includes all Gundog and Terrier breeds that will be fully hand stripped (with some clipping allowed on appropriate areas only, such as throats and inner ears) will be allowed two and a half hours.

8. MODEL DOG: Any full model dog trimmed into any style. The time allotted will be one hour and 45 minutes. The model dog will be brushed out before the class starts, and all other work must be completed during the given time. Colour and accessories will be allowed, but are not compulsory, and the overall quality will be the largest deciding factor in the judging of the groom.

9. POODLES SHOW STYLE: Includes Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles in a show style with spray up top knot.

Toy Poodles (for contest purposes under 11 inches at the withers) will be allowed two hours.

Miniature Poodles (for contest purposes over 11 inches and under 16 inches at the withers) will be allowed two and a half hours.

Standard Poodles will be given two hours and 45 minutes.

The face, feet and tail should be completed during the above timeframe, but should the groomer wish to do the feet only previous to the competition, a 15 minute time penalty will be deducted from the above times. For dogs that have a sprayed and tied topknot, an additional 15 minutes shall be added to the time for the groom.

Prior to prejudging, only two bands may remain in the front of the topknot for the comfort of the dog. All other bands and wraps must be removed for prejudging and the coat must be brushed out.

Wraps may be replaced prior to the start of the competition, but no more bands than the two allowed for the dog’s comfort can be added prior to the start of the competition.

No time penalty will be given for additional clipping over scissoring but may be a consideration during final judging. For example, a Poodle may have the pattern set in with blades or comb attachments prior to finishing with scissors but should two essentially identical quality grooms be presented at the end, the judge may favour the fully scissored trim.

10. CREATIVE: Any dog that is creatively groomed by clipping/scissoring with creative shapes, colouring or a combination of both.

The time allowed will be 2 hours.

BEST IN SHOW: Best in Show will be determined from the first-place winners of all 10 classes.

Runner up Best in Show will be determined from the remaining 9 classes.

JUDGES: If possible, there shall be a different judge for each class. Judges may give a warning to any competitor who is seen handling a dog in a rough manner. A second warning will constitute disqualification. Clipper burns, nicks or cuts will be penalized. The judges will choose first, second and third place in each class, based on entry numbers. The judges’ decisions will be final. NDGANZ reserves the right to substitute a judge with another suitable candidate at short notice in the event of technical failure or unforeseen circumstances.

CONTESTANTS: It is the responsibility of each contestant that they have set up a stable grooming table (height adjustable or not) with a grooming arm. Benches are not acceptable for the competition.

If a contestant is late for any class, they will be allowed to compete if they believe they can finish their dogs in the remaining time. No extra time will be given for the groom and apparently unfinished dogs will not be eligible for placement or prizes.

LENGTH OF COAT: An adequate length of coat shall be required to show a discernible difference between before and after the groom. Ideally this shall be no less than six weeks growth, depending on the breed.

AGE OF THE DOG: Dogs used for the contest should be between one year and eleven years of age and be in good health.

STRICTLY PROHIBITED FROM THE GROOMING AREA:

Cell phones (other than for filming the groom), radios and headsets.

Smoking.

Standing on tables or chairs while competing.

Coaching by anyone at any time while competing.

Visual or written grooming instructions.

ONLINE ARRIVAL: It is important that you are online at least 30 minutes before your class is due to start and that your dog is ready to compete.

The organisers will make a final decision of heights and times for your groom at their discretion.

You are required to stack your dog for judges to view, front, rear, left and right sides and the head.

If you require assistance at any time, your assistant may hold the dog for you, for instance if you need to pick up something you have dropped or replace tools etc.

After judging has been completed, please stack your dog for stills in the same format as prior to the groom.

SPECTATORS:

Spectators will be able to log into Zoom to watch the competition, but they must have their microphones muted and cameras off, or there will be too many faces on the screen while the judges are watching the groomers work. There will be a chat box, where spectators may ask questions during the competition.

If you require any further clarification, please consult the event organisers.

DISCLAIMER: Competitors enter grooming competitions for their own personal enjoyment and growth. The National Dog Groomers Association or any of its volunteers or agents, are not responsible for any losses, real or perceived, that incurred around this event.
