Event description
Learn how to get a veggie garden started at Dr Compost’s free gardening workshop.

About this Event

There’s never been a better time to get out in the garden, grow veggies and become more resourceful. And there’s nothing better than munching on freshly picked veggies from your own garden!

With over 20 years of veggie gardening in our harsh climate, Dr Compost’s top tips will cover all you need to know about starting your own veggie garden.

Find out which veggies grow best in our sub-Alpine/Mediterranean climate, and when to plant them for the best harvest. Learn how to build a raised bed and use mulch to conserve moisture in the soil, plus how to grow from seed, transplant seedlings and stagger plantings to avoid gluts.

Don’t forget the magic ingredient for every veggie garden - compost! It adds life to your soil, increases its water-holding capacity and feeds your plants, all while reducing the waste going into your rubbish bin.

Veggie gardening is a life-long hobby/passion, so we're not promising to give you all the answers in one workshop. But we can guarantee you'll leave inspired to get growing, and with all the knowledge you need to turn your backyard into a productive food hub.

The Dr Compost home-composting project is funded by Queenstown Lakes District Council and delivered by Wastebusters.
