Got to get out for a multi-day river trail bike ride? E-bike riders welcome. Join us for a fun two day ride!
About this event
Have you #gottogetout for our first ever group multi-day river trail bike ride? E-bike riders totally welcome. You can rent bikes off us. Join us for a fun two day ride!
Got To Get Out trips are all about bringing people together through a shared love of adventure, fitness, and making friendships.
For this (first ever) multi day bike ride, our plan is to meet in Ponsonby as usual (with limited self-drive tickets for those who live outside our bus route).
We will put your bikes in our trailer, and you get on the bus! (you can rent bike off us too).
Suggest you get dropped off, or leave your car in free parking for the weekend on a side street.
We will travel to the Waikato by bus and trailer to the Riverside Adventures head quarters.
Those of you who rent e-bikes from Riverside Adventures will get fitted / supplied with an E-bike.
We then ride approx 40km on day one.
Shared kai Saturday night.
And ride about 35km day two.
Is this trip for you?
If you've been to some of our Auckland Transport (or similar) group rides hosted by Rob, or you already know how to ride a mountain bike (or e-bike), and can ride for several hours in a row - then join us!
You don't "need" to know how to ride mountain biking trails, these are relatively easy grade tracks beside the river.
You do need to be relatively fit, able to ride for several hours per day (for two days).
This is not a great trip to 'learn' to ride. Please message us if you are unsure about your skill level.
More details:
DAY ONE Saturday 30th July: approx 40km
Arrive at Riverside Adventures base (to pickup any ebikes required and collect driver (who will relocate the bus so Rob can join the group!)
Continue on to Atiamuri, the southern start point of the Waikato River Trail.
Ride to Whakamaru for a lunch break (bistro, cafe, convenience store) 27km allow 3hrs.
Then continue on to Mangakino 12km allow 1.5hrs, staying overnight at our arranged accommodation providers on Moana Crescent.
Our driver will take your bus and drop any luggage/provisions etc in Mangakino.
Self-cater (pack food) or else they recommend the Mangakino Citizens Club for dinner!
There's a bakery, 4 Square, takeaways available.
DAY TWO Sunday: approx 35km
Breakfast will be provided by your b&b hosts! No need to pack breakfast unless you have special diet needs.
Ride from Mangakino to Waipapa Dam 19km allow 2.5hrs.
*Note that this section has a little bit of Grade 4 riding, due to a few more short climbs/descents and some technical turns etc. Nothing that any competent rider couldn't handle but if any members of the group feel out of their comfort zone there is an easier 10km 'out and back' from Mangakino to the Maraetai Dam access road. We can pick up these riders in Mangakino when we come down to pickup luggage etc.
Bus will pick up the rest of the group at Waipapa Dam and transfer to Arapuni.
BYO lunch or hit the Rhubarb Cafe in Arapuni village.
Then ride the final section of trail from Arapuni to the Pokaiwhenua Bridge carpark (around 14km), we'll have your bus and trailer ready to go.
All going well, we estimate you'll be on the road back to Auckland at around 2pm, back in Auckland 5 - 6pm (ish).
Our itinerary and bike hire is from our friends Riverside Adventures:
