Event description
Together we uncover the many stories, celebrated and woven into the essence of various Taonga-toi that reflect a rich Māori identity.

About this event

To celebrate Matariki this year we take to the streets, harnessing the environmental and energetic properties; Tangaroa-a-kiokio and Tangaroa-a-roa days of our Maramataka.

Delivered by Whakamana (A kaupapa Maori community group) led by Grayson Goffe we voyage along the shoreline exploring the various Taonga-toi that lay along it. As navigators we start at Wynyard Quarter to delve into the many stories that these Taonga share, finishing at Te Rerenga Ora Iti (Takutai Square/Britomart place).

The research for this hikoi stems from the public art publication, Te Paparahi, Toi Māori - Walks in the City, a free printed booklet.

We explore belief systems, mātauranga (knowledge systems), themes, representations, that are embedded deep within Te Ao Māori and reflected through an artistic, urban, architectural, contemporary presence. These Taonga reflect a rich Māori identity, celebrated and woven into the fabric of Tāmaki Makaurau and indeed the waters we voyage together, today during Matariki.

This event is brought to you by Auckland Council and the City Centre Targeted Ratepayers.
