Description
Can we... have clear rivers and seas?
Nearly 13 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into our marine environment each year, a large portion of which is microplastics.
Chillingly, we know little about how microplastics affect the primary producers that are the foundation of our marine ecosystems. Such organisms are essential for carbon cycling and keeping our marine systems healthy and productive.
Join research fellow Dr Julie Hope as she discusses the impact of microplastics on essential ecological processes and ponders how to change society’s relationship with plastic.
Julie is a sediment ecologist and eco-hydrologist at the University of Auckland’s Institute of Marine Science. Her research focuses on the small microscopic algae that live on the seafloor and the inconspicuous animals that play an essential role in our marine ecosystems.
This will be a wonderful way to build your networks and catch up with fellow alumni.
