Event description
Kete Whakairo!

About this event

In this two day workshop with Vicky King from South Canterbury, participants will learn to use colour to form a kete whakairo/ patterned bag.

There will be a choice of learning to make the red/black putiputi design as pictured above or the green pattern, known as inanga after the whitebait, pictured below.

You will need to have been to an intermediate level flax weaving wānanga before or have had similar experience weaving a kete/ pikau. Please note there is an intermediate level wānanga on again, March 5 & 6, 2022. This would be a great refresher before the advanced class, if it's been a while since you were last weaving harakeke.

Participants will need to cut and prepare their flax prior to the wānanga. If you are in/ near Ashburton, there is a possibility of getting together to do this in the week before, weather permitting. Specifics of what to prepare and bring for both kete options will be provided after you've registered.

Places are limited to 12, so book in quick. BYO lunch both days.

This event is part of the Keep Learning Mid Canterbury programme and is open to anyone. The Harakeke Wānanga have been made possible thanks to funding from the Creative Communities Scheme.
